Experiences in Marketing: That Ford Mach-E Ad with Clark Griswold
While when it come to vacation ads, I have an additional beef with a different car manufacturer than the other day.
Today’s target: Ford.
Like practically everyone, I like National Lampoon’s Christmas Getaway. It could be my favorite Xmas movie. And also I can see why Ford would choose to base an advertisement around Clark and also Ellen Griswold to promote the Mustang Mach-E EV.
I even praise Ford for getting Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo to engage and also play Clark as well as Ellen in the ad. Regrettable neither Johnny Galecki nor Juliette Lewis appeared interested. Or Randy Quaid, for that matter.
The advertisement, if you haven’t seen it, recreates the scene in the flick in which Clark, with a help from Ellen, finally gets the Christmas lights to function. In this situation, the Mustang’s battery charger likewise lends a hand. It’s clever and also imaginative as well as would certainly produce a wonderful advertisement. Simply one problem– it’s likewise meant to be amusing. And it isn’t.
The generic stars brought on to play substitute Griswolds do not attract laughs. Even the punchline (“I utilized to have a Mustang, when cars made noises”) doesn’t land. And it’s not a bad line.
Truly, none of the jokes are inadequately composed– they just do not function in addition to they should.
I don’t wish to make mountains out of mounds here– unlike the Mercedes advertisement I place in the crosshairs the other day, this ad isn’t puzzling in all. It’s simply indicated to be funny, and also it isn’t. Which is a pity, taking into consideration Chase and also D’Angelo’s desire to take part.
I’m not exactly sure if the advertisement required far better writing, if the actors (including the A-listers) don’t have their hearts in it, or if it’s simply impossible to record the humor of that scene 31 years later in a cars and truck commercial. Or maybe it’s every one of the above.
I salute Ford for generating the suggestion. I simply desire the completed product made me laugh.
