The new notes will be available at banks and automated teller machines (ATM's), once the Central Bank completes its delivery of the bills to the financial institutions.
With the introduction of the ¢20.000 note, Costa Rica's paper money now includes notes of ¢1.000, ¢2.000, ¢5.000, ¢10.000 and ¢20.000 on August 11.
In the coming year, a ¢50.000 note will also be introduced, along with a redesign and new size of the ¢1.000, ¢2.000, ¢5.000 and ¢10.000 notes.
As it did with the ¢5, ¢10 and ¢20 "silver" coins, the Central Bank is expected to recall all the old notes once the new notes are in circulation and will set a date when the old bills have to be exchanged for new as they lose their legal tender.
The BCCR says it is planning to distribute 180 million notes in the 6 denominations.
