Laura Puts Legislator's In Their Place: Pay Hike Dead and Buried!
Listening to the will or the people or the finding of a collective conscience or perhaps heeding to the stern warning of presidenta Chinchilla, legislators have given up on giving themselves a hefty salary raise even though the bill had already been approved in first vote.
Last night, Viviana Martín, party whip for the Partido Liberación Nacional (PLN) - ruling party - announced that the bill is dead and will be buried.
Presidenta Chinchilla was adamant that she would exercise her right of veto if the bill made it to her desk.
In addition some 15 individual filings with the Sala Constitucional (Constitutional Court) were made by citizens against the "Salariazo" (controversial pay hike).
The position of the new president was well received by Costa Ricans who in the majority where against the legislators giving themselves a 60% pay hike and a political victory for her in less than a month in the presidential chair.
The second and final vote had been scheduled for Wednesday.
The majority of the PLN party legislators has supported and voted in favour of the bill on Monday. However, by Wednesday afternoon the majority of that support had been withdrawn, forcing the bill to be taken off the legislative agenda.
